Charcoal
Within the UK we burn over 60,000 tonnes of BBQ charcoal every year.
A lot of this charcoal is produced from deforestation of the endangered mangrove swamps and rain forests and then transported to the UK increasing the global carbon output.

There are numerous benefits to using sustainable locally produced charcoal.

• Charcoal production utilises coppiced timber that is essential to woodland management and creating diversity within the woodland.

• Certain wildlife are dependent on coppiced woodlands

• The charcoal is easy to light without the use of firelighters and no chemicals are added to the charcoal when being produced (the cooked food tastes far better)

• Good consistent heat output

• Reduced carbon emissions

• Supporting a traditional rural craft.

There are two types of charcoal that can be supplied, a standard charcoal produced from coppiced Sweet Chestnut. This produces a good all round charcoal that lights easily and gives a good consistent heat output. Also available is a premium charcoal that is produced from either coppiced Oak or Hornbeam. The charcoal gives a very high heat output (you have been warned) that last a long time. It is very good for indirect cooking on a BBQ.

Firewood
All the firewood that is supplied is produced from coppiced timber at Norsey Wood that has been seasoned for a minimum of 2 years or from standing dead wood.

All the firewood that I supply are hardwoods and can be supplied either in net sacks or in builder's dumpy sacks.

To get the best from the firewood the timber needs to be as dry as possible. The wood that can be supplied is seasoned but may need additional drying time, if so you will be advised. The wetter the timber the lower the heat output and the higher the emissions.

I recommend that the wood is stacked near to your fire a day or two before its required, this additional drying time will help to reduce the moisture content and get the best from the firewood.

Finally plan ahead, firewood that is dry stored early in the year will give the best heat output and also I recommend that your chimney is swept once a year.

The standard firewood is produced using coppiced Sweet Chestnut, it burns well giving a nice heat output but it is renowned for its spitting abilities. In a log burner it is great but is not recommended for open fires. (Other standard firewood that is more suitable for open fires are available from time to time)

The premium firewood is produced mainly from any of the following Oak, Hornbeam, Ash.
They all burn exceptionally well giving a good heat output and slow burning. You may find that when burning oak in a log burner you may need to increase the airflow to make it burn at its best alternatively it can be burnt with another type of wood.

Kindling
Normally made from Sweet Chestnut.
The wood is very well seasoned and is available all year round

Bird feeders
Rustic looking and made from either Silver Birch or Sweet Chestnut and comes full of bird seed

Planters
Made from either Silver Birch or Sweet Chestnut. The standard length of the planters is 22 inches long and approximately 9 inch diameter. Other sizes can be ordered

Grow bag frame
The frames are made to fit round a standard size grow bag and made from Sweet Chestnut. Once the grow bag has been planted up the frame can then be filled with either wood chip or pea shingle which not only makes it look great but also helps to retain the moisture within the grow bag. The frames can also be used for raised beds and can be made to varying sizes.

Rustic benches, chairs and table
A diverse range is available each one being individual. The furniture is normally available from Sweet Chestnut and occasionally in Oak. All furniture can be made to the size required

Chainsaw carved sculptures
The carvings are abstract and are one off pieces. The idea is to produce something very unusual that enhances the wood that is used and creates a striking feature

Wooden mushrooms and toadstools
A wide variety of sizes and styles are available. The toadstools are great for either sitting on or using as small tables as well as for ornamental purposes. Mainly made from Sweet Chestnut and Oak

Bowls, spoons and cooking implements
A wide variety of timber is used and each item is individual. If the products could be used for cooking or eating purposes they are normally finished with Olive oil.

Whistles toys and puzzles
A variety of different styles of wood whistles are available along with antler and horn whistles. The traditional toys and puzzles are made from various woods and make great gifts for children and adults alike. Bulk orders will be considered on these products

Twig pencils
The pencils are produced from the side branches (brash) of coppiced timber. Each pencil has approximately 2 ½ - 3 inches of lead in them, which are manufactured within the UK and are of a very high quality.
There are 6 colours available, yellow green black red brown blue and also a standard drawing lead.
The wood that is used is predominantly Sweet Chestnut, Hazel, Silver Birch but other wood will be used when available.

Bean poles and pea sticks
They are normally available from late February and are mainly hazel. Using traditional bean poles and pea sticks add to the look of a garden or allotment and are environmentally correct.

Rustic poles and logs
An extensive size range is available as the wood is cut to size for each order. For ornamental use Silver Birch is great but for longevity Sweet Chestnut is better.

Rose arch and trellis
These are made to order and most designs can be accommodated.
